Creative Industries and the Making of the Dutch Golden Age’ and the Uv A research priority area Cultural Heritage and Identity (ACHI). Charles van den Heuvel (Principal Investigator Huygens ING & Uv A), prof. The Dutch Republic played a key role in this “information society” avant la lettre. The project will also deliver a proof of concept of the Amsterdam Time Machine, a collaborative project funded for implementation in the CLARIAH-infrastructure. Its global trade network, its prosperity and its relative tolerance made the Republic a refuge for intellectuals from around Europe. The e Pistolarium tool was continued in the context of the COST action IS1310 Reassembling the Republic of Letters (2013-2018) and is still under further development.
The creation of the constitution in 1814, the review in 1815 and that of 1848 have already been documented in previous Huygens ING publications (see Ontstaan der grondwet (Origin of the constitution)and the correspondence of Thorbecke). It was compiled by Karin van Leeuwen and Marijke van Faassen and covers the debates of the constitutional commissions on possible constitutional amendments from 1880-1980.
This project therefore starts with the constitutional committee under the chairmanship of J. (1883-1884) and ends with the implementation of a number of changes proposed by the state committee chaired by J. Many of these debates are still relevant in the current era.
Consortium partners in this NWO-Middle Large Investment project were the Descartes Centre (Prof. Wijnand Mijnhardt p.i.), Huygens ING, DANS, University of Amsterdam and the KB National Library of the Netherlands.
Within this project Huygens ING developed the e Pistolarium infrastructure.
Moreover, the e Pistolarium will be further integrated in the digital IT infrastructure of the KNAW-Humanities cluster. Charles van den Heuvel Amongst other positions, Allard Pierson (1831–1896) was a church minister in Leuven and Rotterdam, professor of theology in Heidelberg, and professor of art history, aesthetics, and modern languages in Amsterdam. Hans Trapman and Dr Gerlof Verwey are acting as advisers.
This infrastructure will also used for the data and tools of the epistolary network to sustain the outcomes of the project Reassembling the Republic of Letters. He also became an authoritative literary critic, who corresponded with numerous contemporaries. Financial support is provided by the Coornhert Foundation. The oldest written constitution, dating from 1798, was designed for the revolutionary Batavian Republic. In 1814, the first non-republican constitution took form for the United Netherlands.A dramatic increase in the amount of information gave rise to new knowledge. But how were new elements of knowledge disseminated and appropriated?Final work is currently being carried out by Nina Wijsbek MA (Huygens ING/Meertens Institute) and project leader Dr Ton van Kalmthout (Huygens ING). The discussions in the seventeen selected committees provide an insight in the (laborious) policy of revising the constitution, but also in how opinions about politics and society have changed.
